Triangle delivers UK Mail Report

Life, it seems, has never been more interesting for Consignia, now to be called “The Royal Mail Group”. January 1st 2003 is the deadline for applications for temporary licences to Postcomm, the UK Regulator, which are intended to open up the market to the strong winds of competition, and their financial situation could not be much worse with over £1.1 billion reported losses in the last financial year.

At a time of great change it is very timely that Triangle Management Services has published its first major study of the UK Mail market.

The research based report, the World Mail Review – UK Edition, contains a complete review of all the issues on mail regulation, the universal service obligation, reserved areas and licenses in the UK mail market, set against a detailed analysis of the state of the UK economy. It describes in detail the whole UK mail market in the helpful format of a “mail value chain” from “upstream” issues to do with mail houses, consolidators and brokers, through “core mail service” issues with detailed profiles on Consignia itself and other new competitors including not only several foreign post offices such as Germany’s Deutsche Post or the Dutch TPG but also some bright new upstarts such as the Business Post subsidiary UK Mail to “downstream” activities with the various specialist or hand delivery companies. The report explains in some detail the background to “why we are where we are” in terms of the Government’s creations of Postcomm, the Regulator, and Postwatch, the consumers’ watchdog. What are they each attempting to do, what milestones have they set and what are their overall objectives for the UK mail market. And ultimately, where do we go from here.

This report is a must for anyone or any organisation seeking to understand fully what is going on in the UK mail market at the moment, and there is certainly a lot going on! Life for the executives, led by the redoubtable Allan Leighton, is certainly not dull in The Royal Mail Group.
