Differences continue between employment packages in new 2004 UK Express Industry Benchmarking Programme Salary Survey

Following the success of two similar studies (in 1996 and 2001) Triangle has conducted a salary survey looking at operational and sales staff within the UK express parcels industry. The survey draws on Triangle’s extensive experience and contacts in the UK express industry and its considerable expertise in the fields of research to provide an essential benchmarking tool for those with an interest in levels of remuneration in this sector.

The survey, which is based on an in-depth analysis of the remuneration packages of nine of the UK’s leading express parcel carriers including each of the major companies, provides comparisons of basic pay, overtime, hours worked, benefits and allowances paid to operational and sales staff.

On the findings of the survey, Triangle’s Head of Research & Consultancy, Robin Parr-Davies said: “It is remarkable how there remain many substantial differences in employee packages in such a competitive industry as UK express parcels. Knowledge of this type of information could significantly assist in reducing staff turnover.”

The salary survey includes the following information for all levels of drivers, operational staff, security staff and managers, hub employees, sales and customer service staff.

  • Basic pay
  • Hours and hourly rates
  • Overtime rates
  • Shift allowances
  • Bonuses
  • Pensions
  • London allowances
  • Holiday entitlements
  • Sick pay
  • Healthcare, permanent health and death in service
  • Gross pay and total emoluments

The comprehensive information for each of the 24 employee categories has been obtained from each participating carrier and the report shows detailed industry performance in terms of median, lower and upper quartiles giving a very in depth picture of the remuneration structure of the UK express parcels industry.
