World Mail Awards 2003

FIRST CLASS WINNERS

Following a record level of applicants, this year's World Mail Awards, recognising excellence within the Postal sector, were presented to industry leaders on the eve of the 17th World Mail & Express Conference in Rome.

A panel of distinguished judges selected the recipients of the nine awards, covering Internet Commerce, Technology, Customer Service, Innovation, Marketing, Airline Carrier and Industry Leadership. The panel met in Rome, just prior to the Awards presentation dinner, to make their final decisions from an already short-listed pool of entrants.

The global awards evening has been designed by Triangle International Media, the event organisers, to highlight, encourage, and celebrate best practice within the mail industry.

Two hundred senior mail industry executives from around the world attended the Gala Dinner in the Sheraton Roma hotel to congratulate the winners. Mrs Milly Carlucci, the famous Italian film and TV actress, presented the awards together with the sponsors.

Awards were presented to the following winners:

INTERNET COMMERCE - sponsored by Accenture

Winner:  Canada Post, for its Online Business Centre

Canada Post received this recognition for using the Worldwide Web to create an end-to-end business system that offers commercial customers convenient services to help them complete business transactions online. Through the On-line Business Centre, a secure e-business environment, Canada Post customers can access four online self-service areas: a products and supplies ordering service, an account management system, an e-shipping tool and online tracking tools. The judges decided that Canada Post had truly leveraged the power of the internet and provided a solution that met and satisfied many of the criteria set for this award.

INNOVATION - sponsored by Cap Gemini Ernst Young

Winner :  Posten Sverige AB, for its handwritten digital postcards using Anoto technology

The judges felt that this entry was truly innovative as it brought together the historical basis of postcard writing with a new communication media. Posten Sverige have enabled customers to write real postcards, with a digital pen, which are then transferred to a printed postcard by internet or mobile phone. Whilst not yet launched, the judges believe that this innovation has excellent potential and will benefit from the involvement of additional postal partners.

ENTERPRISE -  sponsored by Spring

Winner:  Correos de Costa Rica, for its transformation and branding

Correos de Costa Rica has implemented a comprehensive and successful programme of change over the last few years.  They have achieved increased revenues and profitability and substantially improved quality of service.  The judges felt that the organisation now has a corporate structure independent of government, is self-financing, and provides a role model for the turnaround of a postal operator in a developing country.

CUSTOMER SERVICE - sponsored by Innovapost

Winner:-  Australia Post, for its customer bar-coding

Australia Post has introduced a programme that provides real value to customers through lower mailing costs, greater service quality and simplified mailing procedures.  Building on the best practices of other Posts, involving mail users and additional groups, they have delivered exceptional and industry leading customer service.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR - sponsored by Triangle Management Services

Winner:  Deutsche Post, for its marketing campaign aimed at the Turkish community in Germany

This was a well thought through niche campaign exploiting an undeveloped sector. Deutsche Post increased public awareness of the value and effectiveness of mail through a comprehensive targeted marketing campaign.  A response rate of 25% and a 10% increase in volumes testify to the success of the campaign.

SECURITY - sponsored by DHL

Winner:  - Special Mail Services Ltd., for its Fraud Forum

Special Mail Services handles in excess of 1 million items a month to over 25 million addresses and securely delivers credit and debit cards to virtually every UK based financial institution.  The judges felt that they had adopted innovative approaches to fraud prevention. They have conservatively saved financial institutions over £1million and successfully shared best practice in Fraud arena.

TECHNOLOGY - sponsored by Streamserve

Winner:  Bearbox, for its intelligent consumer delivery boxes

Through the introduction of an innovative wireless solution to an age-old problem, Bearbox won the votes of the judging panel. Their simple, but innovative, solution to combining product delivery and its receipt in the same place, at the same time, showed excellent use of technology with benefits to both recipient and the shipper.

AIRMAIL CARRIER OF THE YEAR - sponsored by Deutsche Post Global Mail

Winner:  KLM

Triangle carried out research using a range of different criteria including: service, timing, value add and cost. From the findings, 65% of the postal operators surveyed, listed this year's winner as being one of their primary carriers, and 46% of those who used this carrier voted it as the best air mail carrier. A total score of 20.9, made KLM this year's winner

The second runner up was Austrian Airlines with a score of 18.4

First runner up was SAS with a score of 18.6

A special mention must be made to Finnair who came out top in overall satisfaction, one of the three criteria used to determine the overall winner.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP - sponsored by Pitney Bowes

Winner:  Dr Klaus Zumwinkel, President & CEO, Deutsche Post AG

The climax of the evening was the presentation of the Industry Leadership award to Dr Klaus Zumwinkel. A top panel of global industry figures judged the winner of this award, which serves to recognise the exemplary leadership of an individual or the collective accomplishment of an organisation in advancing the postal and mailing industry.

Dr. Zumwinkel's leadership has transformed Deutsche Post into an international leader in Postal and Logistics services. He drove the company's transformation through an aggressive acquisition strategy, new technologies and service standards, and the organization's initial public stock offering. Dr. Zumwinkel has clearly played a critical role in shaping the future of the industry.
