FIRST CLASS WINNERS
Following a record level of applicants, this year's World Mail Awards,
recognising excellence within the Postal sector, were presented to
industry leaders on the eve of the 17th World Mail & Express
Conference in Rome.
A panel of distinguished judges selected the recipients of the nine
awards, covering Internet Commerce, Technology, Customer Service,
Innovation, Marketing, Airline Carrier and Industry Leadership. The panel
met in Rome, just prior to the Awards presentation dinner, to make their
final decisions from an already short-listed pool of entrants.
The global awards evening has been designed by Triangle International
Media, the event organisers, to highlight, encourage, and celebrate best
practice within the mail industry.
Two hundred senior mail industry executives from around the world attended
the Gala Dinner in the Sheraton Roma hotel to congratulate the winners.
Mrs Milly Carlucci, the famous Italian film and TV actress, presented the
awards together with the sponsors.
Awards were presented to the following winners:
INTERNET COMMERCE - sponsored by Accenture
Winner: Canada Post, for its Online Business Centre
Canada Post received this recognition for using the Worldwide Web to
create an end-to-end business system that offers commercial customers
convenient services to help them complete business transactions online.
Through the On-line Business Centre, a secure e-business environment,
Canada Post customers can access four online self-service areas: a
products and supplies ordering service, an account management system, an
e-shipping tool and online tracking tools. The judges decided that Canada
Post had truly leveraged the power of the internet and provided a solution
that met and satisfied many of the criteria set for this award.
INNOVATION - sponsored by Cap Gemini Ernst Young
Winner : Posten Sverige AB, for its handwritten digital postcards
using Anoto technology
The judges felt that this entry was truly innovative as it brought
together the historical basis of postcard writing with a new communication
media. Posten Sverige have enabled customers to write real postcards, with
a digital pen, which are then transferred to a printed postcard by
internet or mobile phone. Whilst not yet launched, the judges believe that
this innovation has excellent potential and will benefit from the
involvement of additional postal partners.
ENTERPRISE - sponsored by Spring
Winner: Correos de Costa Rica, for its transformation and branding
Correos de Costa Rica has implemented a comprehensive and successful
programme of change over the last few years. They have achieved
increased revenues and profitability and substantially improved quality of
service. The judges felt that the organisation now has a corporate
structure independent of government, is self-financing, and provides a
role model for the turnaround of a postal operator in a developing
country.
CUSTOMER SERVICE - sponsored by Innovapost
Winner:- Australia Post, for its customer bar-coding
Australia Post has introduced a programme that provides real value to
customers through lower mailing costs, greater service quality and
simplified mailing procedures. Building on the best practices of
other Posts, involving mail users and additional groups, they have
delivered exceptional and industry leading customer service.
MARKETING CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR - sponsored by Triangle Management
Services
Winner: Deutsche Post, for its marketing campaign aimed at the
Turkish community in Germany
This was a well thought through niche campaign exploiting an undeveloped
sector. Deutsche Post increased public awareness of the value and
effectiveness of mail through a comprehensive targeted marketing
campaign. A response rate of 25% and a 10% increase in volumes
testify to the success of the campaign.
SECURITY - sponsored by DHL
Winner: - Special Mail Services Ltd., for its Fraud Forum
Special Mail Services handles in excess of 1 million items a month to over
25 million addresses and securely delivers credit and debit cards to
virtually every UK based financial institution. The judges felt that
they had adopted innovative approaches to fraud prevention. They have
conservatively saved financial institutions over £1million and
successfully shared best practice in Fraud arena.
TECHNOLOGY - sponsored by Streamserve
Winner: Bearbox, for its intelligent consumer delivery boxes
Through the introduction of an innovative wireless solution to an age-old
problem, Bearbox won the votes of the judging panel. Their simple, but
innovative, solution to combining product delivery and its receipt in the
same place, at the same time, showed excellent use of technology with
benefits to both recipient and the shipper.
AIRMAIL CARRIER OF THE YEAR - sponsored by Deutsche Post Global
Mail
Winner: KLM
Triangle carried out research using a range of different criteria
including: service, timing, value add and cost. From the findings, 65% of
the postal operators surveyed, listed this year's winner as being one of
their primary carriers, and 46% of those who used this carrier voted it as
the best air mail carrier. A total score of 20.9, made KLM this year's
winner
The second runner up was Austrian Airlines with a score of 18.4
First runner up was SAS with a score of 18.6
A special mention must be made to Finnair who came out top in overall
satisfaction, one of the three criteria used to determine the overall
winner.
INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP - sponsored by Pitney Bowes
Winner: Dr Klaus Zumwinkel, President & CEO, Deutsche Post AG
The climax of the evening was the presentation of the Industry Leadership
award to Dr Klaus Zumwinkel. A top panel of global industry figures judged
the winner of this award, which serves to recognise the exemplary
leadership of an individual or the collective accomplishment of an
organisation in advancing the postal and mailing industry.
Dr. Zumwinkel's leadership has transformed Deutsche Post into an
international leader in Postal and Logistics services. He drove the
company's transformation through an aggressive acquisition strategy, new
technologies and service standards, and the organization's initial public
stock offering. Dr. Zumwinkel has clearly played a critical role in
shaping the future of the industry.
The 17th World Mail & Express Conference was attended by 300 delegates

held in the Inter-Continental Hotel, Berlin, from 5-7 May 2004.
