Providing an in depth review of issues affecting the Americas mail and express industry, the conference programme highlighted the huge growth potential in the region and the innovation allowing mail and express operators to take advantage of it, while maximising efficiency and trimming costs as the global economy continues to present significant challenges.

Held from 2- 4 February, leaders of posts from around the Americas region including Chile, Dominican Republic and Brazil spoke about their strategies for responding to changing customer needs, and about the drive for profitability. The conference heard how it is essential that posts learn to develop closer business relationships with private sector businesses. The focus of a post should be on satisfying the needs of the customer. It is important also that there be an open, sincere discussion between public and private postal service providers.

Francisco de Lacerda, Chairman and CEO of CTT Correios de Portugal, who has strong links to Latin America supported these views from a European perspective, clearly demonstrating that the challenges in creating winning strategies across the sector is a global issue. He also highlighted the initiative for 2014 is to move the Portuguese postal service to privatisation.

Regulatory challenges in the US brought about much discussion and debate as the conference heard from both Ruth Goldway, Chair of the US Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) and from the Inspector General of USPS, David Williams. In addressing the customer perspective of the US postal market, Postcom’s Gene del Polito reiterated that mail remains an important part of a nation’s infrastructure.

As you would expect, there was huge interest in the wide ranging session looking at the impact on the industry of parcels, express and e-commerce. Companies headquartered in the Americas but with a variety of market positionings and strategic ambitions discussed the importance of developing global links, heard how e-commerce is developing in Argentina and how cross border flows can be facilitated. The session also took a glimpse into the future and reviewed the development and role of parcels lockers in supporting e-commerce growth.

There is no doubt that the global issues affecting the sector are very similar, perhaps just moving at a different pace in some parts of the world. The general consensus of opinion however at the conference, was that no one can address all of the issues alone, partnerships must be developed to succeed and the exhibitors at the event certainly benefitted from the networking opportunities to meet new potential clients.

As the first World Mail and Express series conference and exhibition of 2014, the range of topics discussed were wide and varied, but all relevant and critical to creating winning strategies to succeed in the post and parcels sector. No doubt the debate will continue as the conference series moves to Europe in June and the Asia Pacific region in November. Visit www.triangle.eu.com for more information on these events.
